Air near the skin is kept dry by core protein absorbing moisture from the trapped air, and transferring it towards the outer fleece. The elasticity and strength of the fibres allows movement of the fleece without either losing the air spaces or breaking the fibres.

Wool fibres have an inner core containing protein, which is covered by overlapping scales. The protein core absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture without becoming damp or clammy.

Due to the temperature gradient between the warm skin and the colder air outside of the wool garment, moisture from perspiration moves towards the outer surface of the wool, and then is evaporated into the air.

In times past wool was considered a coarse or heavy fabric. But modern wool is light with high quality fibres that are thin enough to avoid being itchy. All our waistcoats are fully lined so this is never a problem.
