Why do posh people like to wear linen waistcoats? Why is linen the fabric choice? There’s 10 reasons:
- Linen is a natural fibre made from flax. It has a long history as one of world’s oldest natural fabrics.
- High absorbent and a good conductor of heat means it’s cool to touch. Because it feels cool to wear this is why linen is a superb choice for summer clothing.
- Linen is virtually lint free. Having to brush bits of your clothes is a right pain.
- Linen is hard wearing and the strongest of vegetable fibres. It has 2 to 3 times the strength of cotton.
- It’s non-static unlike cheaper man-made fabrics that crackle when you take them off.
- Non-allergenic, naturally insect-repellent and gives UV protection.
- A linen waistcoat is a great choice for a beach wedding.
- Linen can gain up to 20% moisture without feeling damp which is a real bonus when the weather is humid.
- Long lasting, for instance, resistant to moths and is naturally insect-repellent. The linen found in tomb of Tutankamen was intact. In Ancient Egypt it was symbol of light and purity, and a display of wealth and status.
- Ecologically we can be pleased because every part of the flax plant is used. For instance the seeds are used for paint, dyes and cosmetics. It’s genuinely green product: there is no waste, and all the by-products of linen production are reused for other purposes.
Those reasons are wonderful. But is it too perfect? What are the disadvantages? There’s only one disadvantage: linen has poor elasticity, so it doesn’t spring back – this explains why it wrinkles more easily than some other fabrics.
